A debt-ridden farmer Gurrappa, 45, allegedly committed suicide in N. Rangapuram village in Peapully mandal in Kurnool district on Saturday. Gurrappa owned 5 acres of land and took three more acres on lease to cultivate bengal gram. But the crop withered away due to scanty rainfall. Burdened by debt and crestfallen by the loss of his crop, he hanged himself from a neem tree in his field, according to the police. He is survived by wife and two children.
